Multicore Day: The Challenges of Today and Tomorrow
Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 9:30 - 17:00
Auditorium Floor 2, Room 280, Electrical Engineering Building, Technion

Multicore machines, harnessing multiple processors to work on a single task, are rapidly taking over mainstream computing. The spread of multicore architectures will have a pervasive effect on how we develop both hardware and software. Until recently, advances in hardware technology meant advances in clock speed, so software would effectively "speed up'' by itself over time. Now, however, this "free ride'' is over. Hardware advances will mostly mean increased parallelism, not increased clock speed, and exploiting such parallelism is one of the outstanding challenges of modern Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

The challenges facing us are enormous: new hardware designs are
needed, new operating systems and schedulers must be developed, new languages and paradigms must be created, and new programming and debugging practices must be adopted.

This third one day meeting of experts and practitioners in the field will not solve these problems, but it will hopefully allow us to exchange information so as to better understand the challenges ahead.
The distinguished speakers, each from a different area of multicore
research and development, will attempt to survey the state of the
art in their area of expertise, and expose us to their views on what
the future should look like.

Looking forward to seeing you,

Idit Keidar, Avi Mendelson, and Nir Shavit,
